Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher cannot wait to get back into Champions League action tonight when the Red Devils face Greek champions Olympiakos in the last-16 tie, reports The Daily Mirror. The Scot hasn’t played in Europe’s top competition since 2012 when United were beaten by minnows FC Cluj at Old Trafford 1-0. Fletcher had been suffering from a debilitating condition, called ulcerative colitis which has halted his career for two years, according to givemesport.com.
The Champions League hasn’t been kind to the 30-year old, with him being an unused substitute in the 2008 penalty shootout triumph over rivals Chelsea and was suspended in United’s defeat by Barcelona in the 2009 final. He was also not on the pitch for 2011 final at Wembley, where they were again defeated by Barcelona at Wembley due to his bowel condition.
He has regained fitness this term though, and has nailed a place in David Moyes’ midfield set up, being named in the Champions League squad for the knockout phase after failing to make the cut for the group stages.
