Romania is to become, starting this autumn, member of the Executive Council of UNESCO. ‘Romania is one of the countries with the greatest value at the level of this prestigious institution, with 31 positions on UNESCO World Heritage List. I stress that Romania signed all UNESCO conventions, including the one referring to the Immaterial Patrimony of Humanity. In 2005, UNESCO proclaimed the ritual dance ‘Calusul’ as a ‘masterpiece of the immaterial patrimony of humanity’, said Nicolae Manolescu, adding that approaches have been made for inscribing ‘Doina’ on UNESCO list, as well.On the other hand, he pointed out that the monuments protection in Romania is ‘rather at a moral level because what needed to be done has not been done in order to include these values on the UNESCO list. For instance, ‘plaques containing information about the monuments are missing and the cases when travelers pass by without knowing the importance of the place are not rare’. Referring to the Roman mine passageways in Rosia Montana, Nicolae Manolescu said, quoting the famous historian Ioan Piso, that here we talk about ‘a two thousand years history not only of Romania, but of the entire Europe’.
