Walter Smith remains realistic about Rangers’ chances in Europe

Walter Smith has had his say in recent days, and most people in Scottish football have taken notice – the game north of the border, says the Rangers manager, needs a significant boost, both in finance and self-respect.

For Smith and Rangers, though, there is one very good way to secure both, and that is by performing well in the Champions League, with most of Europe looking on.Tonight Smith’s men take on Unirea Urziceni in the Champions League, a game Rangers surely have to win if they are to reach the last 16. At Ibrox yesterday, though, the conversation with Smith remained centred on his club’s current health, their future, and their realistic aspirations.

There is rarely anything in Scottish football to match Rangers or Celtic doing well in Europe as a tonic, yet Smith spelled out yesterday just how cautious he had to be in raising his club’s hopes.
