By George FriedmanWith the Palestinians demonstrating and the International Monetary Fund in turmoil, it would seem odd to focus this week on something called the Visegrad Group. But this is not a frivolous choice. What the Visegrad Group decided to do last week will, I think, resonate for years, long after the alleged attempted rape by Dominique Strauss-Kahn is forgotten and long before the Israeli-Palestinian issue is resolved. The obscurity of the decision to most people outside the region should not be allowed to obscure its importance.

Romanian cosmetics producer Farmec grows sales due to anti-aging product Gerovital

Romanian cosmetics producer Farmec Cluj – Napoca grew its revenues by 15.6 percent in the first quarter of the year, to EUR 5.8 million, mostly due to the increase in sales for the Gerovital anti-aging product, the company has announced. Its 2010 sales stood at EUR 22.8 million, a growth of 10 percent compared to 2009. Farmec Cluj – Napoca hopes to achieve a growth of 7 percent in sales this year.

Orange commits EUR110 million towards rural 3G expansion in Transylvania

According to Romania’s Business Review, Orange Romania intends to plough EUR110 million (USD155.5 million) into network expansion projects during 2011, increasing 3G coverage in rural areas and simplifying customer experience. CEO Thierry Millet confirmed that the investment forms the first stage of a EUR500-600 million plan, to be undertaken by end-2015. However, the CEO noted that the exact volume of investments will depend on how the company is affected by external factors, such as the erosion of financial indicators in the telecoms market and pending regulatory decisions. Millet confirmed that 2011’s mooted investment represents a higher figure than was invested in both 2009 and 2010.
