Wizz to axe 50% of routes from Rome Fiumicino

Wizz Air is to pull four of its eight routes from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport on May 7 in response to what it calls “unreasonable” airport charges levied at the gateway. The low-cost carrier plans to move its routes to Gdansk, Poland and Cluj Napoca, Timisoara and Tirgu Mures in Romania to Rome’s alternative airport, Ciampino which is a base for Ryanair.

“Our Rome routes to Gdansk, Cluj Napoca, Timisoara and Tirgu Mures, carry over 140,000 passengers per year on very low fares. One airport’s loss is another airport’s gain,” said Daniel de Carvalho, corporate communications manager at Wizz Air

“after Fiumincino airport charges have been increased to unreasonable levels, that do nothing to promote tourism and protect jobs, we will now bring this business to Rome Ciampino airport,” he added.

Wizz operates 60 routes to Italy from 15 Italian airports.
