Romanian opposition leader Victor Ponta speaks kindly of anti-graft prosecutors

The leader of Romania’s main opposition party, the Social Democrats (PSD), spoke kindly of the country’s National Anti-corruption Department (DNA) in an interview with HotNews.ro. PSD leader Victor Ponta, who’s party had repeatedly claimed the DNA has been acting politically at the current president Traian Basescu’s order, changed the tone in the interview. He praised the DNA for starting to move against the top ranks of the „institutionalized corruption system” in the country.

Mayor of Romanian city Cluj-Napoca, arrested on bribery charges

Sorin Apostu, the Mayor of the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca, was arrested on Wednesday evening for 24 hours on bribery charges. According to the National Anticorruption Agency (DNA), Sorin Apostu allegedly took bribes of EUR 94,000 between 2009 and 2011 for sanitation and car park insurance contracts. The amounts were collected through his wife’s law office, and his wife is charged in the same case. He was presented to the Court of Appeal in Cluj with the proposal to be arrested for 29 days. This proposal was approved by jdge Ioana Morar.

Over half of dairy products made in Olympus’ EUR 55 mln Romanian factory go to export

Greek dairy producer Olympus, which has recently opened a production facilities near the City of Brasov in central Romania, hopes to reach a turnover of EUR 40 million next year from this factory, while selling more than half of the factory’s production on external markets. The dairy factory in Halchiu is Olympus’ largest investment outside Greece and required investments of EUR 55 million.
