Underground passage for Cluj-Napoca City

The city of Cluj-Napoca might have an underground passage for cars and a car free historic area. The Cluj – Napoca mayor, Emil Boc, former Prime Minister of Romania, plans to build a one – kilometer tunnel and an underground car parking which would ease downtown of its traffic burden.The project’s estimate is 100 million euros and the bulk of it should be covered by European funds, according to the plan. The project was launched for public debate, along with the Southern ring road for the city, which would also take away some of the traffic in downtown Cluj – Napoca, according to Romania-Insider.com.

Cluj – Napoca, the capital of the Cluj county, has some 320,000 inhabitants, while the county has around 660,000 in total. Cluj-Napoca will be the capital of the Northern Transilvania region from 2014.
