Balkans.com: Romania’s 2011 economy in review

At the end of September, the Finnish group Nokia announced it would close down its production unit in Jucu, Cluj County, which happened in early December. Nokia had started manufacturing cell phones in Romania in 2008, with total investments standing at 60 million euros. The Finnish group had previously shut down its Research and Development Centre in Cluj-Napoca, laying off approximately 120 employees. “Nokia wants to direct its cell production to locations of optimal proximity for retailers and key markets. Accordingly, Nokia plans to shut down the factory in Cluj, since large volume production units in Asia are offering a better scale of operations and proximity benefits”, read a Nokia press release. In 2010, Nokia was Romania’s second largest exporter after carmaker Dacia Groupe Renault. 2,200 people were laid off when the factory in Jucu was closed down.

Sociologists: Candidates – mundane characters will dilute politics and reflect it

Sociologists Vasile Dancu and Traian Rotariu from Cluj consider that the appearance of characters from the mundane area running for various public positions in the 2012 elections reflect the level of the Romanian political class and the people’s lack of confidence in politicians. Sociologist Vasile Dancu, the president of the Romanian Institute for Evaluation and Strategy (IRES) declared on Tuesday to a Mediafax correspondent that election year 2012 might offer big surprises about the appearance of candidacies in “the foggy area of vulgarity and the mundane.”

Romanian Banca Transilvania trains employees on EUR 0.4 mln EU co-funded program

Romanian Banca lender Transilvania carried out an 18-month training program for about 750 employees, according to the bank. About EUR 400,000 were invested in the ‘Training continues for the employees in the banking field ADAPTIBA-TEAM’, a program co-financed by the European Social Fund through the 2007-2013 Human Resources Development Operational Program.
