Cableco UPC Romania has announced that residential customers in 13 cities across the country now have access to transmission speeds of 120Mbps. Cities included in UPC’s upgrade are: Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Deva, Arges, Focsani and Ploiesti; (all of which were previously eligible for download speeds of 100Mbps) and Bucharest, Constanta, Iasi, Braila, Galati, Roman and Buzau. The increased download speeds have been enabled by UPC’s introduction of the EuroDOCSIS 3.0 standard. The 120Mbps broadband package is priced at RON50 (USD17.2) per month, with alternative broadband connections priced as follows: 10Mbps (RON15), 20Mbps (RON25) and 60Mbps (RON40). UPC has also confirmed the launch of two new triple-play packages, named ‘Gallant’ and ‘Conqueror’. Both packages comprise broadband internet, cable television and voice telephony. Premium bundle Conqueror includes 113 TV channels and 20Mbps broadband, at a cost of RON70.
Julia Flores, chief operating officer of UPC Romania, commented: ‘We are launching download speeds of 120Mbps for the first time in the residential segment. After two years of network investments, we launched ‘Business Fiber Power’ in July 2010, and now it’s time to launch in the residential segment. Only 23% of Romanians have access to a broadband connection, so internet services are still far from saturation point. ‘Fiber Power’ has been a great success in the cities where it has already been launched, and customers enjoy speeds of 60Mbps and 100Mbps. We believe that 120Mbps Fiber Power will generate the same positive reaction’
