Readers ride on buses for free

For a blissful few days this summer, travelling by bus in the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca only cost a few minutes of reading, says AsianAge.com.As part of a celebration of literature in the city in June, anyone who got on the bus with a book (and presumably, read it) got to ride for free.

The three-day event was organised by Victor Miron, a local book lover. He spent a year campaigning for the project with the city’s mayor.

Cluj-Napoca isn’t the first city to experiment (however briefly) with free public transit. Tallinn, Estonia provides fare-free rides to all its residents. But the Romanian city may be the first to try to entice people to ditch their phones in favour of literature by making their commute cheaper. Sounds like a good addition to any city’s summer reading challenge.
