In September 2008, Plan B opened a permanent gallery in Berlin. It is still located in the German city today, but it is investing in a new space on Potsdamer Strasse, number 77-87.Plan B opened in September 2005 in Cluj, the main city in the Romanian province of Transylvania. It was conceived as a production space for contemporary art. It is also a research centre which focuses on Romanian art from the last fifty years. It features artists who have never been able to find exhibitions on the international scene.
The gallery’s name, Plan B, is a reference to the general situation for Romanian art spaces– as they are particularly dependent on insufficient public funds, “plan B” is a fallback solution calling for individual involvement, a different understanding of institutions and a coherent management policy. Plan B was, for example, the organiser of the Romanian pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennial in 2007.
The gallery also participated in various art fairs, such as The Armory Show in New York, the Art Forum in Berlin, and the Frieze Art Fair in London.
Specialising in Romanian art, Plan B Berlin will feature the painter Serban Savu in April 2012. Savu (born in 1978) studied at the University of Art and Design in Cluj, Romania (1996-2001) as well as spent three years at the Nicolae Lorga in Venice, Italy (2002-2004).
In addition to Berlin locations, the gallery also owns an exhibition space in Cluj, Romania. The exhibition, “Nothingness – The Poetics of Void” by the artist Belu-Simion Fairnaru is being shown until 7 April 2012.
