Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Wednesday at the Victoria Palace announced he will tender his resignation as prime minister.

Over 15,000 persons in Bucharest and few hundred nationwide, mainly young people, protested on Tuesday, demanding the resignations of PM Victor Ponta, Deputy PM Gabriel Oprea and Bucharest Sector 4 Mayor Cristian Popescu-Piedone, after a fire on Friday evening engulfed the Colectiv club of Bucharest. The protest was organised on social media and came in four days after the blaze that killed 32 and injured over 140.

Demonstrations also took place in Iasi, Constanta, Braila, Ramnicu Valcea, Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, Ploiesti, Miercurea Ciuc and Brasov. In Alba Iulia, approximately 1,000 persons staged a silent march and in Cluj-Napoca a few hundred persons participated in a memorial service held by Metropolitan Bishop Andrei Andreicut for the youth who died in the Colectiv club blaze. Tens of people of Sibiu prayed on Tuesday evening at downtown Market Square for the Colectiv victims and lighted candles.
