U.S. Energy Secretary Stephen Chu and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that Alpena-based American Process, Incorporated has been awarded nearly $18 million in Recovery Act funding to accelerate biofuel production. American Process, Inc. is one of the investors in the Alpena Prototype Biorefinery, a new $23.5 Million project yet to be built in a newly created Renewable Energy Renaissance Zone. The Renaissance Zone encompasses land acquired for the project from longtime board manufacturer Decorative Panels International.The new plant will be constructed on a nearly 29 acre site adjacent to DPI’s Alpena facility and will use DPI’s waste material to make cellulosic ethanol and sodium acetate, a commercial de-icer.
When completed and up and running the new biorefinery is expected to create ten new full time jobs and up to 160 spin-off jobs.
