President Pal Schmitt delivered a speech on the main square of Cluj, central Romania, at the closing event of the Hungarian Days on Sunday, encouraging the thousands of people present to take Hungarian citizenship.Schmitt expressed thanks to those who have already used the opportunity of getting Hungarian citizenship through a fast-track procedure introduced in January this year. “Each application has strengthened the faith of ethnic Hungarians beyond the border, the nation and its cohesion,” he said.
Schmitt noted that the city of Cluj had been inhabited by cooperating Hungarians. Romanians and Saxons for several centuries. The president added that he was pleased to see the local Hungarians “be able to love what belongs to them and respect what belongs to others.”
Schmitt is paying a two-day visit to Cluj at the invitation of the International Association of Hungarian Studies.
